Advice on Fear

Posted in advice with tags , on October 31, 2013 by Susan Crane

Happy Halloween. Today we have advice on writing through fear from Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild.
“I find the most important thing for aspiring writers is for them to give themselves permission to be brave on the page, to write in the presence of fear, to go to those places that you think you can’t write – really that’s exactly what you need to write.”

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond

by E. E. Cummings

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

My words

Some evenings fall more softly than others, with pastels instead of hammers, and a thousand or more stars fall between your heart and mine. I study loneliness the way one would a foreign language, let the feel of all the solitary vowels roll over and over on my tongue. I am in the wild and lovely middle of my imaginary life.

“I’m bad and I’m going to hell, and I don’t care. I’d rather be in hell than anywhere where you are.”
